If you enjoy watching ridiculously tense cricket matches that are decided by the final ball of the match, then you would have loved following Esher Boys Under 10s teams in 2023.

Of our fifty-nine matches, three finished in ties. It doesn’t end there. We won one game off the last ball of the match, lost one game off the last ball of the match, and lost one match by one wicket. And that’s just the REALLY close ones!

Despite our penchant for tight finishes and generally making life difficult for ourselves we found that we were heading into the business end of the 2023 season with a realistic chance of winning four of the six leagues that we entered.

Our Dragons team lost a title decider against Thames Ditton to narrowly miss out on winning their mid-week Tier 2 League, but it’s a super testament to the ethos of the Esher CC boys section that we were able to give 8 boys from this team their debuts in Tier 1 matches with the boys often contributing to wins with vital runs, wickets and catches as the season progressed.

In Tier 1 cricket we managed to wrap up the U10s Central League relatively quickly winning nine and tieing one of our ten matches. Heading into the final two weeks of the season we were also unbeaten in the U10s South-West League. However, despite re-arranging fixtures, finding astro pitches to play on and generally doing everything we could to play games we had to abandon our last two matches due to bad weather. So, no losses for this team either, but we finished second in this league. A similar story unfolded in the U10s North-West League where we came up just short. We also won the only U10 Summer Tournament that wasn’t rained off.

In the end we walked away with one league trophy, 14 players on the Surrey performance Pathway, 60 boys playing a lot of cricket, 8 players making Tier 1 debuts and lots of nerve-racking finishes!

Training will be at our Main Ground of New Road, Esher, KT10 9NU.  Only a cricket bat is required and any sports clothing can be worn.

The Clubhouse Café will be open all day on a Sunday and will be serving great coffee and Lek’s ever popular bacon rolls amongst other breakfast goodies. Snacks will be available for children.

We have a fantastic team of coaches led by Duncan Pauline, many with 1st class experience.  Familiar faces of Nic, Sohail and Khurram will be supplemented by exciting new additions for the 2024 season

Coaching Aims

Our aims for the U5-U9 age group are to produce a 15-week coaching programme so that each young cricketer learns how to play the game, in a safe and enjoyable environment. We place a lot of emphasis on making sure that the girls enjoy the training and want to come back for more.

The younger players will usually play internal matches. The U8s and above will start playing competitive matches against other local teams.

All cricket is soft ball, therefore, no need for any protective equipment. The club can supply everything, but we do recommend young cricketers have their own bats, good for practicing at home. During the programme young cricketers will learn, batting basics, the main batting shots, different styles of bowling, the various fielding techniques and match awareness.

So that the young cricketers can gain the most from each session, we keep our coach: cricketer ratios as low as possible. All our coaches are fully ECB qualified with up-to-date child safety requirements and all have gained first aid certificates.  At young age groups, the coaches will often try to involve parents in the session, for example feeding balls for the children to master their techniques.

Learning the correct cricket techniques from an early age really helps, when the cricketer gets older and starts to play matches in the Surrey Leagues

As the girls get older the training becomes more focussed in the following areas:

– Shot Selection – Gaining an understanding of what shots to play for which ball delivered
– Introducing running between the wickets, calling & turning procedures & running the bat in
– Judging run taking, identifying balls to score from and balls to defend
– Setting & chasing run targets
– As always, continue to develop good batting technique
– Intoduce the different styles of bowling, seam, swing & spin
– Increase run ups and follow throughs
– Further develop stronger bowling actions
– Introduce fielding based match awareness sessions

We are confident that the above structure will greatly support the continued development of junior cricket at Esher and provide all with lots of enjoyable cricket.

Looking forward to a busy and fun season ahead!

Kit needed

Although, the club can supply everything, owning and bringing along a bat is useful, it also aids practicing at home

For the under 7’s as they start to play external matches, we play in the Esher CC ‘blue’ playing shirt and any navy trousers/shorts. All can be purchased via the  Esher Kit Shop . Please no names on the back,  numbers  and initials on the front are acceptable.

Matches

The junior girls are entered into the following leagues and will be selected based on qualifying age and appropriateness of the competition to give them the best development opportunities. We generally encourage the U7s and above to play in the matches:

  • Girls Under 08 Smash IT Central – 2025 (2 teams)
  • Girls Under 09 Smash IT South West – 2025
  • Girls Under 09 Smash IT West – 2025<

5th XI

Following on from a title win in 2024, the 5th XI have entered a league team in the Surrey Championship for the 4th Consecutive season and will play in Division 11 West Central of the new Surrey Championship structure.

The intention of our 5th XI is to blend a healthy mix of ‘seasoned veterans’ with an abundance of youth making their first steps in to adult cricket.  All 5th XI home matches will be played at Imber Court.

The team will once again be captained by Gareth Narinesingh (garethnarinesingh@hotmail.com, 07804 639 138)

5th XI – Season Report – 2023 (Gareth Narinesingh)

The 2024 season was a tale of glory for the men and lads of Esher 5th XI!

As ever the 5s squad is a crafted mix of experienced grey hairs and the best of Esher CC youth rising through junior cricket into Saturday lower league cricket. Special mention must be given to the men from the club’s Back To Cricket section who supported with availability, particularly in the first half of the season before the juniors were released from school cricket.

This year, 5s recruited heavily from u13s who stood up to their first taste of senior cricket with consistent performances from Fraser Bache, Joe Inch and Marley Gould.

U14 developing talent also shone through with significant contributions from Ben Frendo, Sam Temperley, Arjun Tahiliani, Adhritdev Baghel.

We also saw classy and powerful displays from Odran Williams, Joe Goodsman, Aghav Singh Dutt and Aaryan Desai evidencing the strength of talent rising through the ranks at Esher CC.

Powered by the depth and strength of our youth cricket, 5s bowled out opposition teams up and down our league. Bowling options were everywhere and tended to rotate around Fraser Bache (12 wkts, 8.5 average) and Sam Temperley who between them contributed 60 overs to the campaign, often bowling in tandem.

The relaid pitches at Imber Court proved to be transformative for our batting form. The highlight of the season was the setting of a new Esher CC club record when we amassed a mighty 387 from 40 overs. Spare a thought for our poor oppo on that searing day!

Overall runs flowed whether we batted first or chased down, with 5 players averaging over 35. Special mention must be given to Ben Frendo with 111* on league debut.

Weather was a miserable factor for the last 3 matches with 2 cancelled and an abandoned game which could not be salvaged despite the disbursement of 2 bags of saw dust across the entire square!

Nevertheless, enough work had been done over the course of the campaign to secure a Division 6 West league trophy for the club’s glass cabinet. With the taste of glory now on our lips this team is hungry for more success in 2025!

5th XI player of the season

Several players stood out this season but the skipper’s player of the season goes to Ben Frendo (u14) who scored a century on league debut. His 111* was technically very good, amassing most of his runs in front of square even on a slow surface, playing himself in patiently and growing in confidence and stature to accelerate in the latter half of his innings. Ben also kept very well for the matches he played in. He is definitely one to watch for the future.

1st XI

Esher 1st XI – Introduction

A hugely competitive group, playing very strong league cricket in the Surrey Premier League. Suitable for first class cricketers, strong club players, and some of the county’s finest youth products alike.

Cricket played in the right spirit is complimented by strong leadership at both club and team level.   A strong social scene away from the pitch mixes the group very well with the rest of the club, and top class coaching at team nights on a Thursday mean this is a great place to play cricket for those in South London and Surrey.

In 2025, the 1st XI will be captained by Rob Honeybul  (honeybulr@gmail.com  07432 590745)

1st XI – Season Report – 2024 (Rob Honeybul)

Season 2024 was kicked off with a strong win to start the season at Sutton, followed up with an incredible performance at home against Wimbledon. Against a star studded Wimbledon lineup, thanks to a destructive 148 from overseas pro Teague Wyllie the 1st team managed to make a very strong 293. With a disciplined bowling performance we managed to get off the mark with a decisive win at New Road. Cricket is a cruel mistress though and we were quickly brought back to reality away against Reigate, before closing out the white ball cricket with another great win at home against a strong Ashtead outfit.

As the weather got slightly warmer, the points on offer got bigger and the ball changed color, we started to lose our winning momentum. We failed to chase a low total at Banstead, got outplayed at East Molesey, and failed to bowl out a struggling Weybridge side after a destructive first innings performance, we were slowly dropping down the table into third place.

However our spirits remained high, as our performances in the T20 competition had been exceptional. A sensational performance away to the national T20 champions Wimbledon managed to see us through to finals day, mostly thanks to a wonderful exhibition of finishing batting by young Oliver Hunt. Finals day was an exceptional display of skill, as Teague Wyllie, David Brent and Don Butchart demolished a seasoned Sunbury attack, taking us to an unbelievable 262. This was comfortably enough to take us through to the final against Reigate, and after another closing performance by Oliver Hunt, we managed to secure the Edwards cup for the first time in Esher CC history.

As July drew to a close, we entered an inflection point of the league season. If we were able to finish out the red ball cricket with a couple of strong wins, we would be able to climb the ladder and really challenge for the Surrey Premiership. Sadly at home we faced top of the table Reigate, and failed to chase a low total after a strong bowling performance. Following this, we traveled to Ashtead and were again unable to chase a low total. The narrative for the season was slowly starting to turn against us.

Heading out to Guildford the pressure was on. Starting to consider the possibility of relegation we reached a deflating 7-87. But thankfully due to one of the best innings we’ve probably ever seen in an Esher shirt, Fred Harrison powered his way to a hundred and we had a strong total to defend. This was backed up by a fantastic bowling performance from Joe Lavender, and Esher managed to leave Woodbridge road with a win.

As I reflect on the season, I think there’s no doubt we didn’t meet our potential. We had great contributions from our new faces, in Joe Lavender who was outstanding week in week out, Don Butchart who showed brilliance across all three formats, and of course Teague who I think we can all agree had an incredible season across all formats and we were very lucky to have. And our vice captain David Brent, who whatever the situation of the game, whether we were in the field or with the bat was unwaveringly brilliant. We also had some fantastic young cricketers come through the side, including Oliver Hunt, Alex Chambers, George Baldwin and Fred Price. No doubt names who will play massive roles moving into the future for Esher CC.

As I look forward to 2025, I see a very bright future ahead. The strength of the group and club is incredibly exciting, and preserving the positive momentum of this season will lead to a lucrative next phase for this group of players.

1st XI player of the Season

We all know the impact Teague Wylie had on the 1st X1 this year. From an incredible 148 against Wimbledon in the white ball, to an incredible hundred in the T20 semi final against Sunbury, I think over the summer Teague convinced all of us the next time we see him might be in whites at Lords.

But given the season Teague had, for him not to take home the player of the season means that somebody else has had an incredible year. Just about every time the side needed him, with the bat, with the ball, and in the field, David Brent was simply outstanding. Averaging 55.5 with the bat with 7 50s and an incredible hundred away against Weybridge, 18 wickets with a best of 4/19, the player of the season is vice captain David Brent.

2nd XI

Esher 2nd XI  –  Introduction

Competitive Premier League team balancing the development of our top academy boys into league cricket, with competitive league cricket for those players on the peripheries of the first team squad. Fantastic standard of cricket at Premier League grounds, and strong social identity. Under the new structure, the 2nd XI will play in the very competitive Division 3 West, along with five clubs 1st XI.

In 2025, the 2nd XI will be captained by Ali Birkby  (alibirkby@hotmail.co.uk  07703 724299)

2nd XI – Season Report – 2024 (Ali Birkby)

After a strong start, the 2nd XI had a mixed season, with glimpses of league winning form buried among a few disappointing losses. After winning 4 of the first 7 games, including memorable wins over Normandy, Guildford, Valley End and Ashtead, the team entered the back half eyeing league success. However, losing 4 of the last 5 games saw the team finish in 6th position.

In May and June, there were some excellent individual performances which took us home in close fought games. Max Wallis took 6 wickets against Normandy to win a low-scoring opening game. Nathan Roberts similarly led from the front at Ashtead with a top-class century (after being dropped on 0). Ben Collins spun Esher to victory against Valley End, taking 5 wickets – which set the scene for Joe De La Flames to take the final wicket in the last over. Tom Brown took 5 wickets against Guildford to set up a nail-biting, successful run chase, in another low-scoring game.

The second half of the season was underpinned by growing inconsistency, with disappointing losses against Valley End, Molesey, Sunbury & Dulwich, which all lacked the individual performances which had been present earlier in the season. More positively, the latter part of the season did include the emergence of the young crop of talent, with Freddie Price, Oli Hunt and Alex Chambers, showing their class to top the batting averages.

Overall, Max Wallis, Ben Collins and Tom Brown ended the season with over 20 wickets, while Ali Birkby & Nathan Roberts ended the season with >400 league runs. Notably, after showing signs of being the new Garry Sobers in the first half of the season, Joe De La Fuente’s mid-season excursion to Canada disrupted his rhythm, and his form dipped on return in July/August. Special mentions to Mark Holliday who mastered the dual role of scorer and statistician, and Joe – Esher’s well-known leading umpire. We look forward to next season, with another year of experience under our belts.

2nd XI player of the season

For the second year in succession, Max Wallis took home the player of the season award. Both his wickets, and great attitude throughout the season, made him the obvious pick yet again. He ended the season with 22 wickets at 22 apiece, and his 6-30 against Normandy will live long in the memory. Well done Waldo!

3rd XI

Esher CC 3rd XI

This year Esher’s 3rd XI will be playing in the Surrey Championship Division 8 Central under the captaincy of Angus Barrett. Last year the 3rd XI had many great wins and cultivated an extremely enjoyable culture. This year Angus will look to lead the 3rd XI in much the same way. By playing a high standard of cricket and using a great mixture of youth and experience the team will hopefully make waves in the league and push themselves to improvement game after game. The new league will also allow 2nd XI hopefuls to prove themselves to selectors and allows the club to continue to expand its already impressive depth.

Overall, the main priority is enjoyment and inclusion, with young and old mixing harmoniously on the field and off. Young players will be able to cut their teeth in the men’s game while receiving guidance from the more experienced players. The amazing atmosphere fostered in previous seasons will continue in full force, and hopefully we will win some games on some glorious sunny days along the way. See you at Imber Court.

3rd XI Captain: Angus Barrett (contact details TBC)

Please see below for the 2024 Season Report.

3rd XI – Season Report – 2024 (Dan Dickenson)

The 2024 season was a strange one, we were well up there in the title winning positions but losing crucial games and a bit of rain effectively ended our charge. Usually, the end of the season when all the talented youngsters come back is our most profitable, but that didn’t manifest itself this year. But that’s cricket.

We won 4 out of our 5 opening games, losing to a decent Malden Wanderers side, so were well placed at second in the first 3rd of the season. Unfortunately, our selection pool was sparse for the crunch match for top of the table Banstead, who we had beaten in one of our two warm up matches convincingly.

That was not the case this time and we were comprehensively slain with Banstead reaching 187 for no wicket, a humbling defeat.

We then had a nailbiter with Old Ruts, the spin twins extraordinaire of Parky and Shiv Patel bowled them out for 79, surely, we could win this?  We did, but 9 down…thanks to young Ayan Sohail hitting the winning runs.

Rain called off our Sutton match, which was annoying as Banstead our closest rivals managed to get a game, how I don’t know, they must have taken a leaf out of EMCC book…

Beddington are the whipping boys of the league, I’m not sure they ever got over 100 in any match, so when we bowled them out for 77- thanks to 14-year-old Orson Jones, and the brilliant Park n Patel bamboozle brigade…more about them later. We decided we really wanted to get home for lunch and watch the 2’s …send in Winder and Adam Helwick, son of the great Darren Helwick….  C Winder 65 off 35, Helwick junior 9 off 34…you can see the aggressor there. A 2-hour match.

We won the next v Wimbledon but was a nailbiter again…thinking that 121 was not really a competitive score, we bowled them out for 102, a combination of Jack Fletcher and yes you know it Park n Patel…this is getting nauseous!

Then comes some of the worst captaincy in the history of Esher v Malden Wanderers at their junior size cricket pitch he decided to stick them into bat! They reached 306 of 54, clearly knowing our firepower. Sadly, our said firepower was more Christmas indoor firework, and we got rolled for 141. Blame the captain!

We drew the next game v Dulwich, just not having enough to bowl them out frustratingly. The following two matches we scored over 600 runs, with Darren Helwick and Andy Mac, combining to devastating effect to destroy Sunbury. Darren reaching 88 off 112 and Andy “Hold it back” Maccalum hitting 71 off 56.

The next match was even better, we fortunately had the pleasure bestowed on us of a certain Mark Hopkinson, who got a very stylish 50. Josh DeVal unfortunately perished on 46 but the two destroyers of Sunbury spanked Old Sinjuns to all parts, 128 red from Darren Helwick and 111 red from Andy Macc, a more sedate innings…they renamed themselves “Very Old Sinjuns” after that innings.’

Rain cancelled the crucial match v Banstead, much to Banstead’s joy, as we had a gun team that day and would have comfortably spanked them. This kept us in second but only just.

This left the last two matches to get as far up the league as possible, and at 3rd we were well poised…somehow, we managed to not win the last two, v Old Ruts and Sutton. No reason, just let them get away with a few too many runs and we didn’t engage partnerships well enough, but that as they say is cricket…

We end up 4th for the 2024 season. Played 18, Won 11, Lost 5 Rain 2

Some mentions…

Darren Helwick (455 runs) the run machine is always consistent and has proven he can bat 2’s in the Prem and comfortably in the 3’s, thank you amigo.

Parky who is also a consistent wicket taker, batter and nice bloke, well done on all three accolades. Finally, Charlie Winder for skipping the back half of the season and proving that a young athletic talent is far superior to a 52 year old has been.

Thank you team it’s been a blast.

3rd XI player of the season

A special mention to a young lad in Shiv Patel, he’ 14 and was the highest wicket taker in the club, but for the 3’s he finished with 30 wickets (highest) and a best of 5/10. Well done Shiv you are a fine prospect not just in your talent, but the whole way you go about cricket, even when selected for a lower team you got on with it and proved yourself straight back into the 3’s again…a fabulous example.

4th XI

The 4th XI play in Division 10 West Central of the Surrey Championship structure.

The intention of our 4th XI is to blend a healthy mix of ‘seasoned veterans’ with an abundance of youth making their first steps in to adult cricket.  All 4th XI home matches will be played at Imber Court.

A final league position of 4th was probably a fair reflection of the season, but it could have been so much better. A thumping loss to Epsom in game 1 was followed by 8 wins in the next 10 games putting us right in contention for the title. However, and unusually for Esher, our form fell away in the later part of the season not helped by two rained off games against bottom side Kempton and a very inconvenient heavy shower putting an end to our run chase, when well on top, against league leaders Valley End. Injuries to 5 regular members of the team was unhelpful in depriving the team of its early season backbone.

In all honesty we didn’t bat well enough. Leading run scorers were U14 Kunsh Khanna (191 @ 31.83), John Woollhead (163 @ 20.37), Sachin Patel (160 @ 53.33) and Tim Clews 160 @ 53.33). The standout innings of the season was Josh Da Val 133 against Chertsey, thereafter only 6 other scores in excess of 50 were made. I am sure collectively the regular members of the team would agree that the end of term report is ‘could do better’

The bowling stood up to scrutiny with the mainstay bowlers Tom Burnett (14 wickets @16.64), Chris Harvey (14 @ 27.64), Chris Parrish (11 @ 18.45) and U13 Joe Inch (10 @ 20.50) all bowling well and restricting opposition totals. The only 5 fer during the season was Chris Harvey 5 for 17 against Chessington. Tom Lenton’s season was cut short by injury having shown fine skills in the early games.

Given the nature of 4th XI cricket a total of 54 players were used during the season. There were notable contributions from many players and the young cricketers when they came back from school in the final third of the season. U13 Marley Gould showed fine promise with the ball in the games he played, I have no doubt we will be hearing more of him in years to come. Tom Pitts played a couple of games and bowled left arm quick before moving up the teams. Other notable contributions from Tom Chandler, Ram Koluna, Shiv Patel (before promotion to the 3rd XI) and Richie Harrison before injury curtailed his season.

The fielding was overall satisfactory with moments of magic but too much not paying attention in the latter part of the fielding sessions thus letting the opposition teams get away from us.

Wicketkeeping duties were shared between Al Mason, showing his class of old and David Crook who did a fine job in some difficult circumstances. Both took several memorable catches during the season.

4th XI player of the Season

Following promotion from the 5th XI, Under 13 Joe Inch came into the team in early June. His flighty leg spin proving to much for opposition batsmen. His 50 overs, 5 maidens 10 wickets at an average of 20.50 show a fine return. A couple of important innings (45 runs at 15) , not least 6* to guide us home against Walton proving his all-round credentials. Joe’s willingness to learn and understand the dynamics of the match were a stand out and rare amongst players of his age.

I consulted the senior players in the team on this award and I think the greatest compliment is the response I got;

‘He bowls well, bats nicely, is interested in learning about cricket and has a great attitude. He thinks about his fields and where/how he wants to get wickets and overall is a really nice lad who we thoroughly enjoy having in the team’

I have no doubt we will be hearing a lot more about Joe in the coming years.

2nd XI – 2023 Season Report (Dan Taylor) It’s very hard to sum up a season like this. At the start the aims of the team were to challenge for the title and be a tough side to play against. Then at the halfway stage things were looking bleak with us languishing at the bottom […]

3rd XI – 2023 Season Report (Dan Dickenson) All in all, 2023 season for the 3rd eleven was strong. Missing out to promotion to the premiership by just 6 points. 4th XI – 2023 Season Report (Chris Burton) 2023 had its ups and downs for the Esher 4th team, finishing in 4th place in the league with 9 wins and 5 losses, wondering what may have been with a drier summer, having suffered 4 rained off fixtures and being 2 wins from our third promotion in a row.
