Esher CC third XI report
Won 1, lost 5 abandoned 1
On reflection a slightly disappointing term for the 3rd XI although there were a number of highs during the season. Due to the re-arrangement of the league fixtures post Covid we found ourselves in the top 3rd XI league of the Championship in a pool of 8 playing each team once.
A fantastic start to the season against Sunbury saw Esher post 215-3 in a match shortened to 20 overs in view of the impending storm. Charlie Winder 90 not out, Ed Crook 87 not out led the charge. However, the aforementioned storm arrived with Sunbury 55-4 off 7 overs and the match was abandoned. Sadly, the performance could not be repeated in the re-arranged T20 at New Road when Sunbury chased down an Esher score of 90-9 with ease.
At Reigate Priory a slightly rusty, post lockdown, team struggled to 110 all out and Reigate made light work of the chase.
Next was Weybridge at our home for the season at the magnificent Shrewsbury House school ground. A fine batting display saw Esher post 277-5 with Matt Sabben-Clare 105 and Ed Crook 70. Charlie Winder starred with the ball claiming 4-13 as Weybridge were bowled out for 175.
Following a cancellation due to rain against Ashtead a chase of 203 against Banstead proved too much with Esher finishing on 157 all out
Wimbledon posted 253 in the penultimate match which quickly became out of reach. A couple of injuries, Crook senior kindly fielding as a short notice sub, and a batting display below our capabilities saw Esher finish on 98-8.
In the final match against East Molesey, Esher posted 153 but it could so easily have been more. An aggressive 77 from Dan Dickenson was the backbone and it just needed a few more to build partnerships with him to post a competitive score. An aggressive spell from 14 year old Salaar Shabbir had East Molesey worried but they weathered the storm to win by 5 wickets.
The highlights of the season were undoubtedly the win against local rivals Weybridge incorporating the Matt Sabben-Clare hundred and the flying start against Sunbury before the rain came.
In addition, a number of the YCs gained invaluable experience in adult cricket which will stand them in good stead for years to come. It really is an Esher strength to see the number of talented youngsters coming through the system and making their way in adult cricket.
Many thanks to new recruit Karen Haywood for scoring in all matches and to the panel of umpies for keeping good order on the field of play.
